New Electric Truck Hub in Wilton Signals Big Change for NSW Freight Operators

New electric truck depot in Wilton, NSW marks a transformative step for Australia's freight industry, enhancing efficiency and sustainability for future transport operations.

Last week, the ABC reported on a major step forward for Australia’s freight industry, with plans for a new electric truck depot in Wilton, NSW.

Led by New Energy Transport, the project will see a pilot fleet of heavy electric trucks supported by a purpose-built charging hub located alongside the Hume Highway, one of Australia’s busiest freight routes.

The Wilton Hub is set to feature a powerful charging infrastructure capable of replenishing large truck batteries, between 600 and 700 kilowatt-hours, in under an hour. This will be one of the first facilities of its kind in the country, setting the groundwork for the future of heavy transport.

Putting Electric Freight to the Test

New Energy Transport recently partnered with Multiquip Transport on a full-scale trial using a 36-tonne electric prime mover. The truck completed the longest single-charge electric truck delivery in Australia, travelling between Picton and Beresfield, a round trip of around 480 kilometres.

The results were impressive. The electric truck completed the journey around 40 minutes faster than usual, thanks to its strong torque and smooth acceleration. Drivers also spoke positively about the driving experience, describing it as quiet, comfortable, and free of diesel fumes.

Multiquip were optimistic about what the trial showed. The technology is already delivering real-world results, and the potential is clear.

Preparing for the Next Era

The transport industry has always evolved, whether through new equipment, safety standards, or digital systems. The move towards electric and smart technology is simply the next chapter in that story.

For transport operators, this isn’t about abandoning diesel overnight. It’s about being ready for what’s coming and making sure your business can adapt.

At Allotrac, we help operators simplify and modernise their workflows, from job allocation and driver communication to compliance tracking. Our platform is built to evolve alongside the industry, helping fleets manage both traditional and emerging technologies with confidence.

Whether your trucks run on diesel, electricity, or a mix of both, the key to success remains the same: clear visibility, efficient planning, and connected operations.

The future of freight might look different, but it’s still driven by the same goal—moving goods safely, efficiently, and smarter than before.
